04/06/08June 4, 2008

Leaders from across the globe are discussing the global food crisis in Rome. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for long-term solutions to the current price hikes and says global food production needs to rise by 50 percent by the year 2030 to meet rising demands. More than 800 million people around the world suffer from starvation or malnutrition. The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in Rome says at least 37 countries are in urgent need of international food assistance. One of them is Bangladesh where about 40 percent of the population currently subsists below the poverty line.
