Ahmadinejad is officially declared winner of Iran's presidential election, but the opposition rejects the results

Michael BärJune 13, 2009

Iran's Interior Ministry has announced official election results showing the incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with a compelling lead of 62 per cent of the votes. Support for the main challenger, Mirhossein Moussa-Vi, was put at just under 34 per cent. The former prime minister has rejected the count, complaining of serious irregularities. Moussa-Vi, who declared victory on Friday evening, issued a statement warning that he would not surrender to what he called a "dangerous charade".
