Alarm in Asia over Rising Food Crisis

14/04/08April 14, 2008

World Bank President Robert Zoellick has called on member nations to act urgently to help avert a global food crisis, saying the rapid rise in food prices could push 100 million people in poor countries deeper into poverty. Zoellick called for a "new deal" to tackle the international food crisis. This follows a warning from the leader of the International Monetary Fund that hundreds of thousands of people are at risk of starvation. Asia has its own spectre in fears of food inflation in general and rises in the price of rice in particular.
