Arsenal give Bayern 'wakeup call'

After a dominant 3-1 victory in the away leg in London, Bayern Munich were expected to breeze by Arsenal Wednesday evening. The team hadn't lost since October, and Arsenal had exited at this stage of the competition for two years running. But poor finishing and two Arsenal goals made what might have been an afterthought into a stressful evening for the Bundesliga leaders.

It was a nightmare start for the hosts at the Allianz Arena. Moments after kickoff, Santi Cazorla played the ball in to Theo Walcott on the right side of the area. Walcott sent a low cross through Dante's legs to Olivier Giroud, who finished from close range to put Arsenal 1-0 up just three minutes into the match.

The goal seemed to awaken Bayern, and they immediately ran right at the Gunners. But, despite two good efforts from Toni Kroos, Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was there to stop the shots and the half ended 1-0.

Bayern continued their onslaught during the second half, but shot after shot either went wide or was not good enough to beat the impressive Fabianski.

Instead, it was Arsenal who scored again. In the 86th minute, Laurent Koscielny beat Javi Martinez to a Cazorla corner and headed in the Gunner's second of the evening with just their second shot on target. Suddenly the visitors were in need of only one goal with four minutes remaining.

Bayern managed to hold on until the final whistle and progressed into the quarterfinals on away goals.

"We are in the quarterfinal," Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said. "That's definitely positive, but we have to improve - that's clear."

It was a surprising loss for a Bayern side that have been dominant all season. They had won every match they'd played in 2013 until Wednesday, and currently sit 20 points clear atop the Bundesliga table.

"We weren't aggressive enough," Bayern winger Arjen Robben said. "I think the second half was better, but maybe it's positive in the end. Maybe it's a wakeup call."

Bayern now become the second German team to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals. Borussia Dortmund qualified last week after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 5-2 on aggregate. Schalke were eliminated by Galatasaray Tuesday after a 3-2 loss in Gelsenkirchen.

Malaga advance at home

Malaga beat Porto 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinal in Wednesday evening's other Champions League match.

Isco scored the first goal of the evening just before halftime with an impressive shot from outside the box in the 43rd minute.

Shortly after restart, a red card to Steven Defour put the visitors - who won the first leg 1-0 - at a supreme disadvantage. In the 77th minute, Roque Santa Cruz doubled Malaga's lead with a header off an Isco corner, assuring them the win and advancement to the quarterfinal in the club's first ever season in the Champions League.  

Joining Malaga, Bayern and Dortmund in the last eight of Europe's premiere club competition will be Real Madrid, Paris St. Germain, Juventus, Galatasaray and Barcelona.
