It finished 0-0 after 45 minutes between Arsenal and Bayern at the Emirates on Sunday evening. The Bavarians didn't take long to capitalize on their man advantage, however, after goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off late in the first half.

Philipp Lahm laid off a pass to Toni Kroos at the top of the box in the 55th minute. The midfielder curled a beautiful shot past backup keeper Lukasz Fabianski and into the net to make it 1-0.

Each side missed a penalty in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Just eight minutes in, Boateng brought down Özil in the left side of the box. The Germany midfielder elected to take the spot kick himself, but his tame effort was straight at Neuer.

In the 37th minute, Toni Kroos chipped a pass over the Arsenal defense towards Arjen Robben in the box. Szczesny raced off his line to intercept the ball, but brought down the Dutchman instead. The Arsenal keeper was shown a straight red, but Bayern failed to capitalize when David Alaba sent his penalty wide.

Repeat fixture

Bayern faced Arsenal at this exact stage in last year's Champions League. A 3-1 victory in London was followed by the Gunners nearly mounting a mighty comeback during the return fixture at the Allianz Arena. Arsenal's 2-0 victory in Munich only saw them eliminated on away goals, while Bayern went on to win the competition.

Jerome Boateng, Thiago, David Alaba, Mario Götze and Mario Mandzukic all return to the lineup for Bayern. Coach Pep Guardiola rested many of his first-choice stars in the side's 4-0 victory over Freiburg on Saturday.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, who marked his return to the Bayern lineup in last week's German Cup victory after being out injured, makes the bench.

German national team regulars Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil both get the start for the North London club, while their compatriots Lukas Podolski and Serge Gnabry are on the bench.
