Bayern rise to Turin test

Bayern's win on Wednesday put two German teams into the final four of the Champions League for the first time ever.

Dominating much of the game even away from home against a hostile crowd in Turin, Bayern matched the 2-0 scoreline they secured last week at the Allianz Arena by hitting a brace after the break.

Mario Mandzukic scored the first, a point-blank diving header on the rebound after Gianluigi Buffon could only parry a shot. In stoppage time, with Juventus broken, substitute Claudio Pizarro doubled the score - courtesy of a fine assist from Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Man of the match also earns suspension

Bayern controlled possession in both halves of the game, even against opponents that needed to press for the win. The game began with a disappointment, however, as Mario Mandzukic was booked for challenge that replays displayed to be completely fair.

"It's bitter because I knew that I hadn't done anything. He went down and made a show of it, so I knew that the referee would give me a card, but I knew I was innocent," Mandzukic told Sky Germany after the match.

Mandzukic scored Bayern's opener and was named UEFA's man of the match, but the booking means he will miss Bayern's semifinal first leg - news that might be music to German international Mario Gomez's ears.

With refereeing once again in focus after the disputed goals for Dortmund and Malaga both on Tuesday, fortune proceeded to even itself out in Bayern's favor. Several players, most notably Philipp Lahm and Javi Martinez, were spared by the Spanish official Carlos Verlasco Carballo after fouls that might have warranted a card. Unfortunately for the referee, who was lenient for much of the match, the early booking he chose to give - perhaps to warn the players to keep calm - followed a piece of play-acting.

Juventus' best individual chance of the night was a free kick from Italian veteran Andrea Pirlo - a powerful drive that tested Manuel Neuer's reflexes to the limit.

Arjen Robben had several first-half chances, as did Thomas Müller, but Bayern struggled to put Gianluigi Buffon to work in the opening period.

Italy's "Old Lady" runs out of puff

Juventus came out of the blocks strongly in the second half, with Bayern looking shaky immediately after the break. Manuel Neuer made another splendid save to deny Fabio Quagliarella, but the strike would have been disallowed for offside had it beaten the German international.

After about five wobbly minutes, the freshly-crowned Bundesliga champions found their feet - with Arjen Robben rattling Buffon's post early in the half.

Mandzukic's opener followed just after the hour-mark, as he headed home a rebound from an initial effort by Javi Martinez.

Juventus were left needing four goals in under half an hour against Germany's best defense - a task that made Dortmund's Tuesday comeback look rather paltry.

The Italians never really managed to threaten Neuer's goal, except from long range. Increasingly, Bayern began to threaten on the break as the Italians opened up their rigid formation.

In the closing minutes, with the Italian crowd and club's hope already evaporated, Bayern put a fourth nail in the Juventus coffin. Bastian Schweinsteiger burst forward into offensive midfield - filling Bayern's creative void with Toni Kroos out injured - and picked out Mandzukic's replacement Claudio Pizarro in the area. The veteran made no mistake.

Barcelona drew 1-1 at home with Paris St. Germain in the evening's other game, doing just enough to squeeze into the semis.

Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Barcelona will compete in the final four; the semifinal draw will take place on Friday.
