Be amazed on World Heritage Day

Germany's extraordinary and impressive sites will be the center of attention on Sunday when UNESCO in Germany celebrates World Heritage Day for the eleventh year running.

Nearly all German World Heritage Sites, from Aachen Cathedral to the Zeche Zollverein industrial complex in Essen, will be celebrating the day. The choice ranges from special guided tours and exhibits to presentations as well as lots of fun for kids. Over 100,000 visitors are expected to take part.

Aachen Cathedral for example will be presenting a model project to help clean up and maintain a German World Heritage site. In the Fagus Factory in Alfeld, a new UNESCO visitors' center will be officially opened on Sunday. And in the landscape Bergpark in Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel, visitors will be offered a tour which will take them to places not usually open to the public.

"UNESCO World Heritage connects" is the theme of the 11th World Heritage Day. In view of the current attacks on World Heritage Sites in the Middle East it is important to underline how much common heritage brings people together, the President of the German Commission of UNESCO Verena Metze-Mangold said ahead of the celebrations. World Heritage connects people beyond national borders.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site list is made up of 1,007 cultural and natural sites in 161 countries. On 26 June the annual World Heritage Committee begins, which will also consider adding new World Heritage Sites to its list.
