Belgium takes over the European Union's rotating presidency

Belgium takes over the European Union's rotating presidency today. Its priorities include tighter financial regulation and closer economic co-ordination among member states -- pressing issues indeed, given the EU debt crisis. But there is some concern that domestic politics could prove a distraction for the caretaker government in Brussels. It came into power following inconclusive elections in June, and coalition talks are expected to continue for months.
