Berlin Street Named After Murdered Israeli Premier

Israeli president Moshe Katzav on Thursday dedicated a street in Berlin's government quarter named after Israel's former prime minister and winner of the Nobel peace prize, Yitzhak Rabin, who was murdered in 1995. The northern part of the street previously known as Entlastungsstrasse will henceforth be known as Yitzhak Rabin Strasse. The southern part of the street will take the name of Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion. In a special ceremony, President Katzav, who was in Berlin to attend an international conference on anti-Semitism, called Rabin a "fighter for peace" and took time to remember Berlin's 50,000 Jews who died in the Nazi concentration camps. While in Berlin, Katzav also met with the German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer.
