Offshore wind turbines will soon be installed in deep waters far from the coast. Their 50 meter tall foundations have to be extremely stable, but lightweight. Marine scientists from Bremerhaven have developed construction plans based on single-celled plankton organisms. The results are delicate-looking steel structures that save two thirds of the construction material compared to current models.
