BMW shines in July

August 8, 2013

Germany’s BMW car group boosted sales in the first half of 2013, seeing growth continue into July. A top executive has called it an excellent performance which may set the luxury brand on course for another record year.

BMW group sales in July jumped 12 percent compared with the same month a year ago, the German carmaker announced on Thursday.

Combined sales of the group, which includes the BMW brand and the Mini city car, jumped to 152,349 cars in the month. The figure for July drove the luxury carmaker's 2013 sales figure above the 1.1 million unit mark earlier than planned.

“The new record for a month of July is an excellent starting point for the second half of the year,” said BMW Chief of Sales and Distribution Ian Robertson.

Compared with the first half of 2012 - a year in which BMW sold more cars than ever before in its history - sales rose 7 percent.

Boosted by rising demand for its new 4 series and X5 SUV models, the Munich-based firm appears set to break last year's sales record of 1.845 million vehicles.
