Bosnia: Border Tensions

December 11, 2013

At its heart, the EU is designed to break down borders. But since Croatia became a member of the bloc last summer, life on its border has become much harder for the Bosnians on the other side.

In some towns, like Metkovic, the border runs through entire streets and local farmers are constantly finding themselves up against customs regulations and time-consuming border controls. The Bosnian government failed to introduce a legal framework allowing goods to be transported through the border crossings. Now farmers are stuck with their harvests because their home is in Croatia but their fields are in Bosnia. The livelihoods of many residents in this no man's land are at stake.
