Breakaway Regions

The end of the Cold War and the breakup of Yugoslavia have created changed borders and new countries in Europe.

The Georgia-Russia war over South Ossetia and Abkhazia in August 2008, as well as Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia in February showed that the process is not over yet. And other people in Europe -- such as the Basques, the Kurds and the Scots -- are struggling for more autonomy.
