A tale of two strikers

Bayern against Dortmund is a battle between the Bundesliga's most successful team and the hippest club, a head-to-head between two coaches with similar personalities and philosophies, and a shouting match between two sets of German and international fans. But in a sense it's also about Poland versus Gabon.

Bayern's Polish striker Robert Lewandowski is a real veteran of this fixture. From 2010 to 2014, the Pole did his scoring for Dortmund before swapping yellow-and-black for Bayern red. But he's never come into the fixture in this sort of form.

The 27-year-old Lewandowski has scored an incredible ten goals in six appearances. If he were to continue to score at that rate over the remainder of the season, he would net nearly 60 times. To put that in perspective, Gerd Müller holds the all-time single-season Bundesliga scoring record with 40 goals. That figure is usually considered untouchable, but the sky seems to be the limit at the moment for the red-hot Lewandowski.

At the other end of the pitch, the club Lewandowski left in 2014 have finally found someone to fill his sizeable scoring boots. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has perhaps been the greatest benefactor of the new system at Dortmund since Thomas Tuchel took over.

Aubameyang may not have Lewandowski's touch or ruthlessness in finishing, but he certainly has better of the Pole for pace. Over the first 10 yards, he's able to open up space and create chances.

The 26-year-old speedster from Gabon, who arrived in Dortmund in 2013, took a while to find his feet. In former head coach Jürgen Klopp's system, Aubameyang seemed to be the piece that didn't quite fit. But this season, playing mostly as a lone center forward, he's scored in each of his first seven Bundesliga matches - that's a new German league record.

Both Aubameyand and Lewandowski have 20 Bundesliga goals in 2015. Whether or not they add to that tally on Sunday could go a long way toward determining who comes out on top in "Der Klassiker."
