Leverkusen dump Spahic after off-field confrontation.

The Bundesliga soccer club made the widely anticipated announcement in a statement posted on their website on Sunday.

In the statement, Leverkusen's managing director, Michael Schade, described Spahic as an "outstanding soccer player," before explaining that in light of last Wednesday's incident, the club was left with no other choice but end its association with the Bosnian.

The statement noted that shortly after the incident, in which Spahic grappled with a number of stewards after Wednesday's German Cup quarterfinal match, Bayer 04 had said that it would wait for the findings of investigating public prosecutors before deciding on what if any action it would take.

However, it also said management came to the conclusion that it had to act more quickly, after videos made the rounds on the Internet, showing Spahic not just struggling with the stewards, but also appearing to give one of them a head butt.

"We have sat down with Emir and reached a mutual agreement. We wish him all the best and lots of success in the future," Schade's statement said.

The club said that Spahic had agreed to the dissolution of his contract, which would have kept him at Leverkusen through the end of next season.

The website also included a parting statement from the defender, who captained the Bosnian national team at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

"I regret by behavior towards the stewards of my club, Bayer 04 Leverkusen after the Cup match last Wednesday evening," Spahic said. "I would like to apologize for this behavior to those affected and their families."

There was no immediate word on where the 34-year-old defender may seek to continue his club career.
