Holders Barcelona have been dumped out of the Champions League by compatriots Atletico Madrid who march on to their fifth quarterfinal. French winger Antoine Griezmann scored a second leg double to leave the Catalans out of the competition before the semifinal stage for the second time in three seasons.

Barcelona, with their genial front-three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, were considered as the favorites to become the first side to retain the Champions League since 1992. But Luis Enrique's side have hit a rough patch recently and have seen their lead in La Liga chopped down to only three points.

Saul Niguez's excellent cross was headed home by Griezmann on 36 minutes to give the hosts the lead. Barca remained in the contest, but were unable to breakdown Atletico's compact defense. Griezmann slotted home from the penalty spot with two minutes remaining to seal Atletico's spot in the semis for the second time in three seasons.
