Climate Champions in Uganda

Uganda is known as a particularly fertile land. Coffee and bananas are the main crops farmed in the country. But the harvests have become increasingly poor due to years of drought. The average temperature has risen by 1.6 degrees Celsius in the past 50 years.

Now some of the country's most prominent figures are taking on the role of "climate ambassadors" to fight rising temperatures worldwide. They have organized tree-planting and trash pick-up drives and have ensured that children learn about climate protection in school. The regional climate project was initiated by the British Council. Now, the bishop of the Bunyoro area will only perform marriages or baptisms if a tree is planted beforehand.

Children are being taught how they can help stop climate change, and famous singer Angella Katatumba is touring the country and giving concerts to bring attention to the effects of environmental degradation.
