Combating extremism in social media – Transnational challenges and (liberal) solutions

Hosted by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom
Monday, June 22 / Plenary Chamber

Social media are increasingly misused as the preferred tools for propagating violent extremism and recruiting radical militants. Governments in all regions of the world are grappling with the question of how to best handle this potentially explosive phenomenon.

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom will host a panel of media professionals and specialists from a number of countries to discuss the ramifications and policy options available to confront the surge of violent extremist propaganda on digital platforms.

The panelists are well-versed in the Foundation's liberal ideals and efforts. They will make a case for recognizing legitimate security concerns while, at the same time, weighing these considerations against the dangers of sacrificing freedom of expression in a globalized world.
