External relations commissioner-designate Benita Ferrero-Waldner has put forward the case for a EU role on the UN’s Security Council. Appearing before the European Parliament on Tuesday, the Austrian would-be Commissioner said forging a coherent EU foreign policy would be her priority during her term in office. In the long term, this would "logically lead to the EU being represented at the Security Council," she said. Facing 41 speakers over three hours, Ms Ferrero-Waldner made coherence a major theme throughout. "Our impact will be enhanced if we speak with one voice," she said. "We still do not have the role we deserve on the world stage." That role, she told parliamentarians, is as a "dynamic global protagonist." (euobserver.com)
