German prosecutors said Monday they were seeking an arrest warrant against a woman after the bodies of nine newborn babies were found on a plot of land in the east of the country. Authorities said the 39-year-old woman from Frankfurt an der Oder on the Polish border was suspected of giving birth to each of the infants and then killing them one by one between 1988 and 2004. The state prosecutor's office in the city said the grisly find in the nearby town of Brieskow-Finkenheerd was made Sunday. The suspect, who authorities said lived with her four remaining children, is currently in questioning."When someone went to clean up the lot, he found human bones in an aquarium," state prosecutor Ulrich Scherding told rolling news channel N24. Authorities added that other bodies were hidden in flower boxes and pots and would now be taken for autopsy. Police with sniffer dogs were combing the area for other corpses. "We are faced with a crime whose scope, in my memory, we have never seen in the history of the federal republic" since 1945, said Brandenburg state interior minister Jörg Schönbohm. "We must ask ourselves how this unbelievable crime remained hidden all these years."
