Cyprus: Living in the Divided City - ej 06.02.2008

Kay HagedornFebruary 7, 2008

The Republic of Cyprus is holding presidential elections in the middle of February. Incumbent president Tassos Papadopoulos faces a challenge from Dimitiris Christofias. The main issue in the campaign is whether there is a chance of reuniting the island country. The atmosphere between the Turkish and Greek parts of the island is frosty. Half of the Greeks have been to the Turkish part only once. Almost 40 percent have NEVER been there. This although there are 5 border crossing points. The Turkish Cypriots cross the border more readily - to work in construction or as chambermaids in the wealthier Greek part.
