Democrats' Surprise Success in Hong Kong Polls

Hong Kong’s democrats had been apprehensive about Sunday’s poll amidst speculation that post-Olympic nationalism might give the pro-Beijing forces a boost. But in the end the democrats did quite well, again capturing the majority of those seats available via universal ballot. Most importantly, with 23 of 60 seats overall, they again have enough votes to veto constitutional amendments.
