DW-WORLD.DE, Deutsche Welle's online division, won the NetMedia European Online Journalism Award 2003 in Barcelona in the category of best news story. DW-WORLD.DE was honored for its reporting on the European Union's eastward expansion last year by editors Andreas Tzortzis, Arne Woll and Daryl Lindsey.

The series, “Europe Goes East,” examined the challenges and opportunities faced by the European Union as it expands its membership by ten countries in 2004.

“At DW-WORLD.DE, we emphasize analysis and background information,” said Guido Baumhauer, head of DW’s online division. “European stories are also a focal point in Deutsche Welle’s profile. The NetMedia EOJ Awards seek to reward quality journalism on the Internet. For that reason the award is a pleasant confirmation of the high journalistic standards that Germany's foreign broadcaster also offers on the Net.”

Around 120 jurors from media companies and universities in 20 different European countries this year selected 21 Online Journalism Award winners from over 1,000 entries. The prize, created for journalists by journalists in 1999, is considered the highest European honor for online journalism. Other winners included the BBC, the Financial Times, the Danish School of Journalism and the Institute for War and Peace Reporting.

DW-WORLD.DE is the multilingual, multimedia Web offering of Deutsche Welle, providing information in 31 languages in text, images, audio and video. It offers news and background reports from Germany, Europe and the world that are complemented by information about programming on DW-TV and DW-RADIO. Moreover, DW's online department offers special reports and German courses in numerous languages.
