DEUTSCHE WELLE's Arabic service now on Nilesat

Germany's broadcaster extends radio broadcasts in North Africa and the Middle East

As of today (PUT IN THE DATE) DW has added an Arabic and an English radio channel to their existing services on Nilesat 101. From 14:00 local time (Egypt) listeners can hear a total of three and a half hours of news and information in Arabic from Germany and Europe. At all other times DW's English service is available on the same channel.

"This is a unique opportunity for us because it will now be easier to reach the listeners in the Middle East and North Africa," said Khaula Saleh, head of DW's Arabic service. "Five times a day there is a news journal live from Germany. And since September 11 we have introduced two new regular broadcasts, 'Living in Germany' and 'Dialog between the Civilizations/ Cultures of the World' with which we would like to foster mutual respect."

DW-TV and the German service of DW-RADIO began their digital and free-to-air broadcasts via Nilesat 101 in October last year. According to the satellite provider Nilesat the technical reach of DW's signal is about 4-5 million households. The footprint of the satellite family Nilesat (101 and 102) extends from Morocco to Egypt and covers large parts of Mali, Niger, Chad and Sudan as well as the whole Arabian peninsula. Satellite dishes of about 60 to 90 centimetres (ca. 23-35 inches) are sufficient for the reception.

Nilesat reports that letters from European audiences show that due to the satellite's spillover the signal can even be received as far north as Denmark.

DEUTSCHE WELLE is Germany's international broadcasting service offering German as well as foreign language radio and TV programmes. DW-TV broadcasts 24 hours commercial-free programming, news, documentaries, sports, cultural and current affairs in German and English.
