Digital Economic Boom in Kenya

September 11, 2012

Life in Kenya has changed a lot thanks to technology. Commerce, education and communication are now all far easier because of high-speed Internet connections - and bills are now paid via phone. Three years ago a new era dawned in Kenya; the first fiber optic cables in eastern Africa meant that people there would have the same ability to surf as people in Europe and the US. Network providers have been frustrated by cases of vandalism and sabotage, but the progress is remarkable. One success story within the broader picture is "M-Pesa" - a simple mobile phone system allowing Kenyans to transfer money without having a bank account. Almost two-thirds of the adult population now pay their bills via phone.
