At least 38 people have died after a tour coach crashed Sunday night on the 116 autostrada near Avellino, about 160 miles (250 kilometers) south of Rome, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

The bus reportedly crashed into cars that had been slowed by heavy traffic and fell 30 meters (100 feet) off a viaduct and into a ravine, rescuers said. State radio reported the bus driver was among the dead.

A fire service spokesman said at least 10 people were injured. They were still reportedly in hospital on Monday.

The coach was carrying around 50 people back to Naples after a pilgrimage in the southern region of Campania, Italian media sources reported.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the accident.
