More than 1,500 participants from 95 countries spent the last three days discussing “Climate Change and the Media” at the World Conference Center Bonn. At the closing ceremony of the 2010 Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum, Deutsche Welle’s Director of Television, Christoph Lanz, said that journalists have to set really high standards. “We have to be solid, we have to be reliable, we should be able to validate all the different sources of information,” said Lanz. “It’s not about only transporting other peoples voices or opinions, it’s about investigating problems, investigating solutions and bringing this to the viewers, listeners and users – in an easy and understandable way.”

Representatives from science, politics, business and the media attended the more than 50 available workshops to examine what the media can do to increase awareness for on of the most pressing issues of the 21st century.

The debates and discussions over the last few days, said Lanz, have made it clear that “it’s more likely to get results from the economy or the industry side.” He also pointed out that “there are really good chances for environmentally-friendly technologies, even under the aspects of growing markets.” The media must present these opportunities and individuals have to be active in preserving the environment. And just as the results of the environmental survey from Synovate have shown, Lanz stated that people expect more from the media.

Lanz announced that the next year’s Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum will operate under the main theme: “Human Rights in a Globalized World – Challenges for The Media”. The conference will take place from May 16-18, 2011 at the World Conference Center Bonn.

Co-host of the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum is the Foundation for International Dialogue of the Sparkasse in Bonn. The convention is also supported by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, the Family, Women and Integration Ministry of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, European Funds for Regional Development, the city of Bonn, DHL, the KSB Group and Faber-Castell.
