Deutsche Welle (DW) is expanding technical and programme assistance for Radio and Television Afghanistan (RTVA). Kandahar TV has just received a 3.6 m satellite dish and receiving equipment from Germany's international broadcaster. This follows a similar package for Kabul TV in 2002.

DW-TV transmitts news in Dari and Pashto from its studios in Berlin twice a day. Kandahar TV tapes the newscasts and rebroadcasts them at 18:20 and 19:20 local time.

DW bought the satellite equipment in Islamabad, Pakistan, and sent it via Quetta in the south across the Afghan border to Kandahar. Technicians from Pakistan installed the dish and the receiver on 18 April. DW-TV also supplies Kandahar TV with documentaries and features on a regular basis.
