The union of European international broadcasters “Bruges Group”, will be integrated into the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) through the newly created “International Broadcasting Assembly” (IBA). This was determined at the EBU General Assembly in Prague on 26. June.

The Bruges Group was founded in 1991 by BBC, DW, RAI, RTPi and TV5 in the Belgian town Bruges. Today group members come from more than 20 foreign broadcasters across Europe.

Group members are connected through their goal to connect people worldwide with high-quality news from Europe and other regions. IBA wants to promote central aspects of European culture and values such as democracy, press freedom and human rights. Furthermore, the union creates a platform for the professional exchange of experiences, knowledge and ideas.

At the last annual convention of the Bruges Group, representatives from member broadcasters convened on the sidelines of DW’s Global Media Forum in Bonn. They elected a new Executive Committee, which will head the IBA from now on. Klaus Bergmann, Director of International Relations at DW, will chair the committee.

María Jesús Pérez Gómez, from Spanish broadcaster RTVE, and Eszter Kantor-Riga, representing Hungarian Duna TV, will be deputy chairwomen.

As an official component of the EBU, from now on the IBA will meet annually and be open for all EBU member broadcasters who operate abroad (via TV, radio or online).
