Eco@Africa: DW and Channels TV launch environmental program

At the global climate conference in Paris, DW and Channels TV agreed to deepen their cooperation. Starting in February 2016, the broadcasters will start the joint production of an environmental program called Eco@Africa.

DW's Director General Peter Limbourg and Channel TV Chairman John Momoh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Paris on Wednesday, December 9. They were accompanied by Germany's Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks and her Nigerian counterpart, Amina Mohammed.

Eco@Africa will report on innovations and best-practice guidelines in Africa and Europe and will present ideas on environmental protection from all over the world. It will focus on the preservation of biological diversity, the utilization of national resources, energy sources of tomorrow and the mobility of the future. The magazine is designed to be interactive: readers will be able to contribute their own ideas by uploading stories, photos and videos to social media.

DW's Director General Limbourg said: "This is the first real coproduction with Africa, produced in Lagos and Berlin and aired by DW and Channels TV. It is an important step for us because it is a real collaboration." John Momah added: "This emphasizes the strong partnership between DW and Channels TV. Together we will inform about the great efforts to protect the environment."

Barbara Hendricks, Germany's environment minister: "Climate change challenges us all, we have to overcome this challenge together. What could be better than deeper insights into each other? I'm delighted about this new program by DW and Channels TV which showcases successful environmental projects." Her Nigerian colleague Amina Mohammed added: "The media plays an incredibly important role in communicating information about collective environmental efforts. I am very happy about this new program, particularly as Africans are heavily threatened by climate change, but also the least informed about it."

The first edition of the program, scheduled to air in February 2016, will include features on a new species of birds in Benin, the recycling of plastic waste from the canals of Amsterdam for shipbuilding purposes, and environmental pollution of Nigeria's Ogoni Delta caused by the oil industry.

Channels TV has the largest audience of any private news station in Nigeria. Its flagship show 'News at Ten' is the most popular news program in the country. DW and Channels TV began their partnership in July 2015. On Channels TV's program 'Business Incorporated', DW regularly reports live on events at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
