The problems revolving around so-called “embedded journalists” will be the focus of a workshop hosted by the German Armed Forces at the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum. Is it possible for war reporters assigned to a military unit remain objective? Or is this just an attempt at manipulation from the warring parties? Protecting journalists during armed conflicts will also be discussed during the workshop, which is titled: “The German Armed Forces and their engagement in conflict prevention: the media in an armed forces mission?”

This is just one of many workshops that are taking place at the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum. The first-ever event will examine “Media in Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention” and will convene at the World Conference Center in Bonn from June 2-4, 2008. Among the more than 600 guests that have already registered are Shirin Ebadi, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize from Iran, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs and his Slovenian colleague Dimittrij Rupel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and President-in-Office of the European Council, Günter Nooke, Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid from Germany and Dan Austin, Director of Voice of America.

Many well-known organizations are also taking part in the conference, including GTZ, InWent, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Conference of the Asian Media Information and Communication Center (Singapore), Committee to Protect Journalists (New York), Bonn International Center for Conversion, Academy of Information and Communication of the German Armed Forces and Reporters Without Borders.

Media representatives and others interested in attending need to register for accreditation online at www.dw-world.de/globalmediaforum by May 28.

The Foundation for International Dialogue of the Savings Bank in Bonn is co-hosting the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum. The conference is supported by the German Federal Foreign Office, the State Government of North-Rhine Westphalia, DHL, the city of Bonn, VT Communications and Blatzheim Networks Telecom.
