Despite resistance from Germany, the European Union's Council of Ministers on Monday approved a wide-reaching ban on tobacco advertising. The ministers reached an agreement in Brussels that tobacco advertising should be banned in magazines, newspapers as well as on the radio and Internet. Germany voted against the new regulations because it represents an overextension of the European Union's legal jurisdiction, said Alexander Müller of the Ministry for Agriculture and Consumer Protection. The regulations also bar tobacco companies from sponsoring sporting and other events like Formula One racing that are international in nature. Among the strictist in the world, the rules are scheduled to go into effect starting in July 2005. German officials say they will appeal the decision to the European Court of Justice.
