The American children's program and its famous Muppet characters made their first appearance on West German television four decades ago. Back then the show caused quite a stir and child psychologists had quite a job educating worried parents about it. Today, Ernie, Bert and Kermit are legendary characters -- and significantly tamer than they were in their youth.
