With a total of 17,159 registered criminal violations in 2003, Frankfurt has now replaced Berlin as Germany's most dangerous city. According to criminal statistics released by the German Interior Ministry on Monday, Frankfurt has seen a 12 percent rise in crime. The greatest increases were recorded in violent crimes, break-ins and financial fraud. Berlin is now the city with second-highest crime rate: the number of criminal incidents sank last year by 3.4 percent. However, police in Berlin recorded 733 incidents of rape in 2003 -- the highest number in a decade. Stastically speaking, the safest city in Germany remains Stuttgart, with a mere 8535 recorded crimes per 100,000 citizens.
