German Actress Ilse Werner Dead at 84

German actress and singer Ilse Werner, best known for her film roles during World War II, died overnight at the age of 84, her agent Edeltraut Langhals-Declair said Monday. Werner was born in Batavia -- today's Jakarta -- to a wealthy Dutch salesman and a German mother. She came to Germany at the age of 10 and in the 1930s began appearing in pictures produced at the legendary UFA studios in Babelsberg outside Berlin where Marlene Dietrich got her start. Her most famous films hit cinemas following the war's outbreak, with "Die schwedische Nachtigall" (The Swedish Nightingale), "Wir Machen Musik" (We're Making Music) and "Grosse Freiheit Nr. 7" (Port of Freedom) among her biggest successes. The pictures spotlighted her renowned talent for whistling, a skill she picked up as a child and cultivated throughout her career. Langhals-Declair said Werner had died in her sleep in a retirement home in the northern city of Lübeck after a long bout with pneumonia. It was her request to be buried in Potsdam near Babelsberg.
