An agent for Germany's Federal Intelligence Agency (BND) has been arrested on suspicion of espionage, according to the federal prosecutors' office in Karlsruhe. The 64-year-old veteran employee was arrested at his home near Munich on October 9. A statement from the federal prosecutors' office said the man was thought to have passed along information to a foreign female agent between late 1999 and last month. The statement did not name the foreign country, but sources close to the case say it was Bulgaria. The Reuters news agency reports the man had worked in the Balkans in human intelligence gathering and had contacts with other foreign intelligence agencies. According to Der Spiegel magazine, the German government is outraged that a friendly country may have been engaged in spying. German and Bulgarian spokesmen in Berlin and Sofia have declined to comment.
