German Conservatives Call For Ronald Reagan Square in Berlin

According to German tabloid Bild Zeitung, Germany's conservative opposition Christian Democratic Union, the party once led by former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, has called on Berlin's city government to name a square or a street after the late U.S. President Ronald Reagan. CDU General Secretary Laurenz Meyer was quoted as saying "We should recognize his contribution to reunification by naming a square or street near the Brandenburg Gate after him." The proposal has found support with Cornelia Pieper, general secretary of the liberal Free Democratic Party, Kohl's coalition partner during the years of Reagan's presidency. Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has said he will be attending Reagan's funeral after the meeting of Group of Eight leaders at Sea Island, Georgia, on Friday this week, in order to pay tribute to Reagan's commitment to ending Europe's East-West division.
