The German film 'Head On' scooped the top prize at the annual European Film Awards Ceremony in Barcelona on Saturday, swaying the judges with its tale of the travails of a Turkish couple in Germany. The European Film Academy presented the prize at its gala ceremony here to director Fatih Akin for his story of Cahit and Sibel, second-generation Turks in Germany, and their search for relief from the realities of life. The film had already won the German film prize and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film festival. The best actor prize went to Spaniard Javier Bardem in the Spanish film 'Mar Dentro' (The Sea Inside). Alejandro Amenabar won the best director prize for the same film. British actress Imelda Staunton took home the best actress prize for her eponymous role in the Franco-British production Vera Drake, the story of a secret abortionist. Norwegian actress and director Liv Ullmann won a special prize for European Achievement in World Cinema 2004. Among the stars attending the gala award night were Wim Wenders, Jeremy Irons, Jeanne Moreau, Victoria Abril, Sergi López, Nikita Mijalkov, Franka Potente and Bruno Ganz.
