The trial of Jan Zocha, Germany's most wanted criminal, started Wednesday in Düsseldorf under high security measures. The 37-year-old defendant is charged with a series of 20 robberies in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate and stealing half a million euros ($650,000). Zocha, who is believed to be highly intelligent and known to speak six languages including Russian and Arabic, ignored several questions posed to him by the judge and eventually pretended to be asleep during the proceedings. His attorney criticized the security measures imposed by the court as inappropriate and discriminatory. The "king of robbers" was born in Hamburg and spent his childhood in shelters and asylums after his father had shot his mother and committed suicide. He was arrested in 2003.
