German Newspaper Gets Lifeline

One of Germany's flagship dailies is getting closer to overcoming what has been year of bad financial news. The Munich-based Süddeutsche Zeitung will get a €100 million ($107 million) injection when the Südwestdeutschen Media Holding company steps in as the sixth member of its publishing group. The newspaper denied a report Friday that Germany's Federal Cartel Office was considering blocking the deal. A spokesman said the permission will be given "shortly." Last year, the newspaper, which boasts circulation of 443,118, lost €43.9 million on revenues of €808 million.
