A group of British sportscar drivers were arrested by German police after clocking up speeds of up to 272 kilometers per hour (169 miles per hour) in an illegal race across Europe, police said on Monday. The group of 12 cars was stopped on a motorway near the southern city of Nuremberg on their way from Austria to Frankfurt on Sunday. Police cameras had picked them up driving dangerously and overtaking on the hard shoulder. Police said all of the drivers had been charged with endangering the safety of other motorists. Four of the drivers were found to be under the effects of drugs. Police said the participants had each paid around 1,500 euros ($1,830) to take part in the race. The drivers were accompanied by three cameramen and three women models. The group had left London in the middle of last week on a trip which had included a night in Amsterdam and a tour of the Ferrari headquarters in Modena, Italy, before reaching Austria.
