Controversial German aristocrat Prince Ernst August of Hanover had been consuming alcohol before attacking a photographer and a hotel owner, his lawyer told a courtroom on Thursday. The prince, the husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco, was not in court to hear the start of his retrial for several cases of causing bodily harm dating from 1999 and 2000. The prosecution says the prince repeatedly kicked a photographer from the weekly magazine Bunte in Salzburg, Austria, in 1999, and in January 2000, he hit a German disco owner on the Kenyan island of Lamu and called the man a "German pig." The prince's lawyer, Jochen Heidemeier, said he regretted both incidents. (AFP)
