German Students Flood Austrian Colleges

The University of Vienna said Monday it was freezing enrollment procedures for its medical school after 1,500 applications were received, 1,200 from German would-be students. With 1,560 places available for first-year studies, 950 applications have already been accepted, according to the deputy university rector Rudolf Mallinger, quoted by the Austrian APA news agency. "For the remaining 610 places still vacant we have received more than 1,500 requests for preliminary enrollment, of which about 1,200 from German students," he said. "We have therefore decided to suspend preliminary enrollments." The university received the flood of applications from German students after a European Court of Justice ruling last week that all European Union nationals must be treated equally when enrolling for studies.
