German Terrorist Knew of Attack Plan

Jailed left-wing extremist Andrea Klump made a surprise admission to a Stuttgart court Thursday that she had prior knowledge of a 1991 attack on Jewish emigrants in Hungary. The 46-year-old is accused of 33 counts of attempted murder in the Budapest attack. Klump denies having been a member of the extreme left-wing Red Army Faction (RAF) that carried out numerous terrorist attacks in Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. In her statement, she said her long-term partner, RAF member Horst Ludwig Meyer, had tried to recruit her to bomb a bus carrying Soviet Jews. She insisted having rejected participating, but said she had provided logistical help by renting six rooms in Budapest's city center and managing money matters. "It was clear to me that I was supporting Horst Meyer and the planned attack," she said. Klump is serving a nine-year sentence for her part in a failed 1988 attack on a Spanish disco frequented by American sailors. The Budapest bombing on Dec. 23, 1991 injured four people on the bus and two police officers. Klump was captured in Vienna in 1999. Meyer was shot dead while resisting arrest at the same time.
