The German Transrapid consortium has discontinued its efforts to win the concession to build the prestigious Beijing-Shanghai train route. It is now concentrating its efforts on winning the contract to build one of two train stretches in the Shanghai area, a spokesman for the firms told the AFP news agency. The consortium, which is made up of ThyssenKrupp and Siemens is focusing on the 180-kilometer (112 mile) connection between Shanghai and the Expo site in Hangzou and the 300-kilometer stretch from Shanghai to Nanjing. Chinese media reported on Tuesday that the government would award the 1300 kilometer Beijing-Shanghai route to local companies. The Transrapid consortium had been competing against the Japanese Shinkansen and the French TGV. A decision on the Beijing-Shanghai stretch is expected this year.
