Germans Are Eating More Fish Again

The consumption of fish increased from 14 kiliograms per head in 2002 to 14.4 kg in 2003, according to Hamburg’s Fish-Information Center ( FIZ) on Tuesday. Each household consumed on average 19 times more fish than in the previous year. The total amount was 1.96 million tons, from which 1.65 tons were imported -- 3 percent less than in 2003. The average selling price rose by 1.7 percent, which accounts for an increase in salaries and energy prices. However, the retailers’ profits remained constant, with the discount markets selling a staggering 48 percent of the total sum. Taking the country’s currently difficult macroeconomic situation into consideration, the sector said that it was all in all quite content with this year’s result.
