Germans More Anxious Than Ever Says Study

Germans are feeling increasingly insecure, according to the results of a survey published on Thursday. Commissioned by Germany's armed forces and conducted by the Bundeswehr's Social Scientific Institute, the study found that 44 percent of the people surveyed said they felt apprehensive, up by 14 percent compared to last year. What's more, 59 percent said they perceived the increasingly shaky pensions system as a threat, 57 percent felt threatened by international terrorism, and 54 percent said they were scared because they wouldn't get enough benefits if they lost their job. The study also concluded that most participants were in favor of a stronger role for the Bundeswehr within the country, both in times of catastrophe and to combat terrorism. Only 46 percent said they supported the role of the Bundeswehr in stabilizing Afghanistan and 47 percent thought the foreign deployment of the army to combat international terrorism was useful.
