2022 Ryder Cup bid

Berlin may have lost out on a chance for the 2024 Olympic Games, but the area around the German capital is going after golf's premier team event. The proposed venue is a course often ranked as the toughest in Germany.

Ryder Cup Germany (RCD) announced on Wednesday that it will put forward Sporting Club Berlin, located in the resort town of Bad Saarow some 70 kilometers southeast of the capital, to host the 2022 Ryder Cup. If the bid is successful, the tournament would be held on the Nick Faldo Course, which was designed by the English golfing legend and is known for its plethora of bunkers.

"We're very pleased to go into the running with this lovely course," RCD chief executive Marco Kaussler said. "The time has come to bring this unique competition to Germany."

The three-day team competition, which pits the United States against Europe, alternates between courses in Europe and the US every two years.The first European country other than the United Kingdom to host the tournament was Valderrama in Sotogrande, Spain, in 1997. Nine years later, the K Club's Palmer Course in Straffan, County Kildare in Ireland became the second and the Albatros Course, Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in France will become the third in 2018.

It's the second time that Germany has bid for the Ryder Cup. The RCD tried to obtain the rights to the 2018 event, but with the quality of European golf courses on the rise competition was fierce.

The RCD now has until the end of April to submit a formal bid. Austria, Italy, Spain and Portugal are also bidding to host the 2022 Ryder Cup.
