Germany Increases Security after Attacks

Germany's national railway operator took steps to bolster security and Berlin transport officials raised the alert level to "yellow" on Thursday after the London explosions. "We adapted our security concept in light of the current situation," a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn told Reuters. The Berlin transport authority said it was adding more security personnel in the city's underground system and train stations.

Police in Germany's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, boosted security at British and US installations in the state Thursday, including a number of British military bases. The British military in Germany has two commands, both stationed in North Rhine-Westphalia -- the United Kingdom Support Command at Mönchengladbach and the 1st United Kingdom Armoured Division at Herford. Berlin police took similar measures at the UK embassy.

The German Foreign Ministry warned German nationals visiting London Thursday not to use the public transport
system following a series of blasts and set up a crisis cell at the London embassy to serve potential German victims. "Travelers are asked to avoid public transportation and public gatherings in London," it said in an advisory posted on its website. German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer spoke with Ambassador Thomas Matussek in London by telephone immediately after the explosions.
