The Greens Party is pushing for legislation that would make it possible for thousands of East European cleaning women to work legally in Germany. Green Party leader Katrin Göring-Eckardt called for the change in an interview with the Berlin newspaper Tagesspiegel. It followed the announcement of plans by the federal government to crack down on illegal workers. Göring-Eckardt said new regulations for cleaning women were necessary because a large share of the illegal workers in German households come from Eastern Europe.
